Joan Didion – The New Sunglasses Superstar

It goes without saying that Joan Didion is a literary genius whose career has had notable highs. For those who don’t know of the great Joan, she is an American author who started out at Vogue, working her way up to becoming a feature editor. At the same time she also wrote her first novel and by the time she was 34, she had already published 2 books. Throughout her long career, she has written novels, essays, scripts and screenplays and has been awarded doctorates by Harvard and Yale. The woman is an interesting character who has suffered great loss and tragedy, losing both her husband and daughter in the space of a year. She turned this tragedy into The Year of Magical Thinking, one of her best-received works of non-fiction.

Aside from being generally badass, Joan Didion has inspired a generation of men and women to follow a career in journalism, and I’m sure that Carrie Bradshaw would never have existed without the musings of Joan. It’s no surprise then to see that Céline chose Didion as its latest poster girl for their 2015 sunglasses campaign. The fashion industry has always been ageist, eschewing a model as soon as she hits 24 and it worships the mantra of ‘youth is beauty. Youth sells’. The past year however has brought around a meteoric change to the world of fashion with the likes of Iris Apfel, the D&G ladies and the Gucci grandmas and of course Didion, all starring in campaigns.

It’s great to see such a turnaround and there’s no denying that Didion looks anything less than cool in these Tilda sunglasses. She has been described as the perfect model for the brads effortlessly cool aesthetic and the shot, captured by Jurgen Teller, shows that age truly defies cool.
