At SmartBuyGlasses we believe eye health is something that should be important all year round. Typically however, people only really begin to care when the sun is shining and we get to pull out our shades and a the most we think of them as something to finish off an outfit. But your eyes should always be important and it’s at this time of year that people tend to complain of eye strain and dryness. We’ve put together some top tips for ensuring you keep your eyes in tip top condition in the cold months.

You’re Hot then you’re Cold

As the song goes, ‘though the weather outside is frightful, the fire is so delightful…’. But all of this movement from cold to hot plays havoc with our eyes and skin and can leave us feeling a little dry. A great solution, especially for anyone severely suffering from these effects, is to pick up a personal humidifier. You can just place it on your desk and the air around you will be instantly moister, meaning your eyes and skin will be moister too. Plus you’ll be the talking point of the office too. If that’s a little intimidating, you can always invest in some eyedrops.

Super Foods for Super Vision

Food and diet are something that always come to the forefront of our minds at this time of year with every other post on Facebook being about someone’s Aloe Vera cleanse or their all kale diet. Dieting is obviously a great way to stay healthy but food can also have a major effect on our eyesight. Check out these foods for healthier eyes:

  • Salmon contains fatty acids that are also found in your retina, eating this can reduce your risk of getting dry eye syndrome.
  • Kale, spinach and other leafy greens can provide anti-oxidants that help prevent retina damage.
  • Carrots, and other orange vegetables, help you see in the dark. Well not quite but the vitamin A they contain helps us to adjust to low levels of light at night.

A Cup a Day keeps the Doctor Away

This one is definitely a positive. Kind of. There’s nothing better than having a hot cup of tea or coffee on a cold day and it’s been shown that drinking a cup of coffee or tea a day actually helps to moisten eyes. Just make sure you only drink one because anything more can actually make your eyes dryer.

computers

Twenty. Twenty. Twenty

Since we’re spending less time outdoors, we’re probably spending more time inside watching TV or surfing the Internet. Both of these things can cause strain on the eye, there is in fact a name for it, Computer Vision Syndrome (find out more here). So to make sure you don’t add unnecessary strain to your eyes just remember the 20-20-20 rule. For every 20 minutes looking at a screen, you should look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Sunglasses in Winter

OK, so it’s a rare day that the sun shines in the British winter, but it does happen and when it does it’s important to remember to don those fancy sunglasses you got over summer. Plus if it has snowed you’ve got to be extra careful of that glare, so a pair of polarized sunglasses are a perfect choice. Plus you’ll look badass too so there’s no excuse to to bring them with you or at least keep them  in the car.

You’ve got Nothing Better to do

To be honest, what are you doing in this weather other than going to work and then getting back home and staying cozy? I think I can answer for you: Nothing! So why not use this time to do something productive and go and see the optician. It’s one of those things we always put off but will be beneficial in the long run. Just make sure that there isn’t torrential snow before you set-off.
