Celeb Fails

We all look to our celebrity idols for fashion tips from time to time, but it’s important to remember that even the most on-trend fashionista can get it wrong every once in a while. Here are ten of the most shocking celeb eyewear fails, but since we here at SmartBuyGlasses are a nice bunch, we included some looks that also suite them better, along with advice on how you can get it right next time you step out in your shades!

1. Kendall Jenner Sunglasses

Kendall Jenner Sunglasses

Despite her family connections, Kendall Jenner was determined to make it as a fashion icon in her own right, and over the past year, has pretty much nailed it. She rarely gets it wrong in the fashion stakes, but this snap of her at Coachella festival last year is one rare example, where her statement shades actually just make her eyebrows look like they are growing mold!

At UK festivals the rain and mud make it almost impossible to look good, but at the same time we all know this, so the bar is set low accordingly: some wellies and a battered old pair of aviator sunglasses are usually enough to pull of the festival look. But we are talking about Kendall Jenner at Coachella, not Ed Sheeran at Reading!

A much better choice are these in vogue Cat-Eye Frames on the right. Kendall was caught wearing these during a stroll around NYC, but these shades are both stylish and effortlessly cool, perfect for nailing that casual look.

2. Rita Ora Sunglasses

Rita Ora Sunglasses

Rita Ora is a girl with serious style. We have seen this week in, week out on The Voice, where she brings more laughs than all the other judges  put together. Rita Ora’s unique style also extends to her eclectic collection of eyewear, ranging from classy and sophisticated Tom Ford shades to these wacky ‘eyelash sunglasses’ that look like they are about to fly off her face at any moment. She is not the first celeb to fall foul of this bizarre trend, but we hope that she’ll be the last. Much better are these flattering Ralph by Ralph Lauren sunglasses that she’s rocking on the right.

3. Johnny Depp Sunglasses

Here Johnny Depp takes a classic frame style and ruins it by going OTT with some ill-judged purple lenses that even one of Hollywood’s biggest heart-throbs couldn’t carry off. Purple, Johnny? Really? To the right, these Porsche Design sunglasses give an altogether more sophisticated look. Teamed with the razor sharp shirt and tie, they are perfect for a more formal event, but could easily be dressed down as well.

4. Spencer Matthews Sunglasses

Spencer Matthews Sunglasses

Made in Chelsea love-rat Spencer Matthews attempts to emulate a British classic with these Steve McQueen inspired Persol 0714 sunglasses. Sadly for Spencer, he falls way short. The shades and velvet jacket make him look a little like an 80s era Elton John, minus the musical talent, or any talent at all for that matter. The Ray-Ban® frames with gradient lenses that he is wearing on the right are a lot more on point, adding a bit of rock’n’roll edge to his more dressed down look.

5. Cara Delevingne Sunglasses

Cara Delevingne Sunglasses

Another Instagirl and style influencer who had a breakout year in 2014 was Cara Delevingne. This girl has enjoyed a meteoric rise to become one of the most in-demand models around. So she should know by now that the Beanie and Shades combination is never a good idea, especially when the frames you are wearing make you look like you’ve got a monobrow. A much better choice are these mirrored sunglasses she’s rocking on the right. Mirrored lenses are set to become an even bigger trend than last year, especially since they can give a cutting edge to even the most casual of outfits. You can get the look in a pair of Cutler and Gross sunglasses.

6. Kanye West Sunglasses

Kanye West Sunglasses

I’ve never been a fan of shutter shades. Kanye was somehow able to drag them out of obscurity and back into the mainstream when he made it big in 2007, and hipster types at student EDM nights have been wearing Kanye West sunglasses semi-ironically for peacocking purposes ever since. Sorry Kanye, we love your music, but you’ve unleashed a monster here: those shutter shades should have stayed in the 80’s where they belong. On the right, Kanye tones it down by sporting some ice cool Retrosuperfuture Flat Tops. One of the most fashion forward brands around right now, Super Sunglasses are made that much better than shutter shades by the fact that they are actually a functioning pair of sunglasses.

7. Nicky Minaj Sunglasses

Nicky Minaj Sunglasses

Nicki Minaj is another pop superstar known for her out-there fashion sense, and with these shades she goes a step too far. The Flat top Style is all well and goodl, but that clumpy gold bar on top makes her shades look more like a curtain rail. In her shoot for Roberto Cavalli sunglasses Nicki looks a lot cooler. The pilot style frames are much more delicate and suit her face shape perfectly, whilst the gradient lenses are stylish and up-to-the minute. A definite improvement.

8. David Beckham Sunglasses

David Beckham Sunglasses

What more can be said about David Beckham? World class athlete. National treasure. Inspiration to millions across the world. Fashion flop? Well, obviously he gets it right almost all the time, otherwise pretty much every brand under the sun wouldn’t be falling over each other to endorse him, but there have been a few dodgy campaigns along the way. His 2005 campaign for Police sunglasses showcased some awesome products, but these gradient, rimless shades were definitely not one of them. Colour, shape, style, just, all wrong!

More recently David Beckham seems to have hopped on the Retrosuperfuture train. Super sunglasses really do seem to be the eyewear of choice right now, and if they are good enough for becks, they are definitely good enough for us!

9. Lady Gaga Sunglasses

Lady Gaga Sunglasses

What list of fashion flops would ever be complete without Lady Gaga. It’s no surprise to point out that Lady Gaga’s style be a little, well, brave, but that’s why we all love her right? These shades though (left), make her look less diva fashion queen and more like an evil minion in Dr. Who. Maybe that’s what she was going for? I mean, huge kudos to the Jeremy Scott x Linda Farrow creation but sometimes, fashion works better in theory than in practice. However, in some Tom Ford® Alexandra sunglasses Lady Gaga looks every inch the superstar. The delicate frames and soft tint to the lens give her real star quality, as if she needed any more!

10. Rihanna Sunglasses

Rihanna Sunglasses

You always have to be weary of add-ons to your eyewear; they rarely amount to a good look. Here is a prime example; the beads attached to Rihanna’s sunglasses (left) are totally unnecessary and ruin what would otherwise be a simple but effective look. A much better choice are the classic Oakley® Frogskins. One of Oakley’s oldest and most popular lines, these frames are perfect for a chilled out summers day on the beach, the industry leading polarized lenses shielding your eyes from all the harmful effects of the Sun’s rays. Simple, but totally effective.
