After weeks of speculating whether the Duchess of Cambridge had fabricated her due date to throw the media off the scent, the Royal Baby finally made his debut this week.
The as-yet unnamed baby tipped the scale at 8lbs 6oz, the heaviest heir to the throne to be born in 100 years. Greeting crowds outside the prestigious private Lindo Wing yesterday, proud father Prince William acknowledged, “He’s a big boy, quite heavy.” He jokingly added that the baby had “a good pair of lungs on him, that’s for sure.” Actually thought
The world’s media went into a frenzy after learning the Duchess was admitted to hospital in the early hours of Monday morning, and revellers celebrated later that night after the baby’s birth was announced around 8.30pm. Departing from tradition, the birth was first announced via a press release before an easel was placed outside Buckingham Palace, to placate the British media that had stopped presses in hopes of news from St. Mary’s Hospital.
After Baby Cambridge arrived at 4.24pm on July 22nd, the Duke and Duchess made an announcement of their own the following day, thanking the hospital staff. “We know it has been a very busy period for the hospital and we would like to thank everyone – staff, patients and visitors – for their understanding during this time.”
After visits from both sets of grandparents, the new family greeted the world’s press on Tuesday evening on the steps of the Lindo wing to rapturous applause. It was the same scene 31 years ago when Princess Diana debuted William to the world. Dressed in a custom Jenny Packham dress, Kate Middleton appeared to pay homage to the baby’s late grandmother in a polka dot design, the same pattern Diana wore when introducing William. “It’s been very emotional. Any parent will know what this feeling is like,” she told reporters.
The happy couple stopped to answer a few questions, including the all-important one – what’s his name? “We’re still working on a name, we’ll have that as soon as we can,” said Prince William. After returning to the hospital to have the mandatory car seat check, the family loaded into a black SUV to head to Kensington Palace, where family members including Kate’s sister Pippa were said to be waiting. Comfortable in his new role as a proud father, William opted to drive his new family home himself.
